The presentation includes a tour of the 10,000 square foot facility and it’s metalworking, casting and technology shops and features a talk on the Integrated Technology & Design Department, and how it fits in with CIADCs approach to object making with its two core categories: 3D CAD modeling for design, rendering, and CNC output, and electronics for light, movement, and sound.

The Chicago Industrial Arts & Design Center (www.ciadc.org) is a non-profit organization with a mission to provide education, working access, and community for 3D object makers working with materials and processes requiring specialized skill sets, industrial space, and shop tools. We occupy 10,500 square feet in Roger Park, housing 4 studio departments: Fabricated Metalworking and Forging (FMF), Woodworking (WDW), Casting (CST), and Integrated Technology and Design (ITD). We offer the general public access to learn and use the space to create sculptural, functional, and decorative objects, be it for hobby or profession.
Our ITD Department focuses on 2 core categories, for stand-alone or object-integrated approaches: 3D CAD modeling for design, rendering, and CNC output, and electronics for light, movement, and sound.
Matthew Runfola
Founder and President

Matthew has previously owned a custom design/build furniture and sculpture business focusing on fabricated metalwork and unique patina finishes. He has authored a book, “Patina: 300+ Coloration Effects for Jewelers & Metalsmith (Interweave, 2014). Matt has a mechanical engineering degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, but creative freedom led him into the arts. Matt headed the Metal Sculpture program at the Evanston Art Center for 13 years, where he initiated many of the programming concepts he brings to CIADC. Matt is a longtime resident of Rogers Park, and is excited to bring the Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center into his community.
Alan Baker
Integrated Design & Technology Department Manager

Alan is a Chicago-born creative with a BS in Math and Computer Science from DePaul University. In his search for a great combination of logic and art, he found himself running the machine shop at Northwestern University, designing and fabricating research equipment, as well as teaching courses in shop safety and basic electronics. After several years, he moved from Northwestern to a stint hanging out on boats all day, but finally settled on teaching CAD and part design in Ravenswood. Alan finds his passion in bringing together artistry, programming and science to create truly unique manifestations and experimenting with new forms of creation. He loves to share his concepts and knowledge with others, and finds a great joy in teaching. He currently resides on the North side of Chicago.
CIADC is located in Rogers Park at 6433 N. Ravenswood Ave., Chicago, 60626. Our dedicated parking and main entrance are in the rear of our building. Overflow parking is available on the street (non-metered, no sticker required), or 1 block south in the plaza lot on the NE corner of Ravenswood and Devon Ave.
