Software-defined radios (SDRs) are communication receivers and transmitters where some part of the signal processing work has been moved from the analog realm, running on specialized hardware, to the digital realm, where the signal processing is done on general-purpose hardware interfaced to general-purpose computers. Martin O'Shield and Shyu Lee will describe the background and motivation for SDR, its history, the variety of solutions, the current business and technical landscape, and their own work in designing, manufacturing, and promoting software-defined radios and systems. They will display one of their SDR systems and - maybe - demonstrate it actually working!

Shyu Lee is engineering manager and co-founder at meteroi.com and is hardware artist at lophilo.com.

While there will be light refreshments available, feel free to "brown bag" it and bring in food from the outside to eat during the social hour.
